Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) Chennai strengthens genomics and multi-omics capabilities through partnership with Premas Life Sciences
The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, a leading institution in diabetes research and metabolic disorders, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Premas Life Sciences (PLS) to advance genomics and multi-omics research in India. This partnership aims to accelerate scientific discovery and enable deeper insights into chronic diseases like diabetes through integrated omics approaches.
Through this collaboration, MDRF will leverage Illumina’s advanced sequencing technologies along with Premas Life Sciences’ expertise in implementation and support to enhance its research capabilities. The initiative is focused on enabling high-quality genomics workflows, strengthening translational research, and driving innovation in precision medicine.
A key aspect of this partnership is the collaborative development of research work flows, assays and applications, designed to address India-specific disease burdens, particularly in diabetes and related metabolic conditions. By integrating genomics with other omics, the collaboration aims to generate comprehensive datasets that can lead to more informed research outcomes.
The partnership also emphasizes skilling and training initiatives, with plans to conduct workshops, hands-on training programs, and knowledge-sharing sessions for researchers, clinicians, and students. These efforts will help build capabilities in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies and data interpretation. The MoU between MDRF and Premas also includes Premas supporting and facilitating strategic industry–academia partnerships for MDRF with relevant collaborators.
In addition, both institutions will work together on scientific outreach and awareness initiatives, engaging with the broader scientific and medical community to promote the adoption of genomics in research and healthcare.
“At MDRF, we are committed to integrating cutting-edge technologies with clinical research to better understand and manage complex diseases such as diabetes,” said Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman, MDRF.
Dr. Radha Venkatesan, Head of Genomics in MDRF said “This collaboration marks an important step in advancing genomics-driven research in India.” “By working closely with Premas Life Sciences, we aim to create impactful solutions that are relevant to our population.” Said Dr. R. M. Anjana, President of MDRF.
“Our focus has always been to enable access to advanced genomics technologies and build strong scientific ecosystems in India,” said Mr. Praveen Gupta, Managing Director, Premas Life Sciences. “This partnership between MDRF and Premas Life Sciences reflects a shared vision of driving innovation through multi-omics, collaborative development, and continuous skilling of the research community.”
MDRF and Premas Life Sciences will continue to work closely with academic institutions, healthcare providers, and researchers to strengthen the adoption of genomics and multi-omics approaches across the country.
